How To Measure Your Existing Exterior Door
Measuring an exterior door for replacement or installation can seem daunting, but with a few simple steps, it can be easily done.
Step 1: Measure the Width Start by measuring the width of the door frame from one side to the other. Measure in three different places - the top, middle, and bottom. Record the smallest measurement as the door width.
Step 2: Measure the Height Next, measure the height of the door frame from top to bottom in three different places - the left side, middle, and right side. Record the smallest measurement as the door height.
Step 3: Measure the Depth Lastly, measure the thickness or depth of the door. This is the measurement from the front of the door to the back. Standard exterior doors are typically 1 3/4 inches thick. It's important to note that before purchasing a new door, be sure to check if the door frame is perfectly square. If it is not, the measurements for the height and width may need to be adjusted to fit the frame properly.
Step 4: Measure the width of the door jamb. Exterior door jambs typically measure 4-9/16" or 6-9/16".
In summary, measuring an exterior door for replacement or installation requires taking accurate measurements of the width, height, and depth of the door. By following these simple steps, you can ensure that you purchase the right sized door for your home.
